In another sign of health for both the display ad segment and Facebook, eMarketer predicts Facebook's banner ad business will top $2 billion this year, making the company the biggest player in the category.
The researcher predicts Facebook's U.S. display ad revenues will hit $2.19 billion this year, an 80.9% jump over 2010. Such revenues grew in the triple digits in 2009 and are projected to increase 31.3% from 2011 to 2012, according to eMarketer's estimates.
Meanwhile, eMarketer predicts Google's display ad business will grow 34.4% this year, making the company a strong number three player in the category, next to Facebook and Yahoo.
The researcher's prediction comes after another projection earlier this month that display ad revenues will overtake search in 2015. Though eMarketer isn't alone in predicting strong growth in the display market, its projections are at odds with IDC, which claims that Google overtook Yahoo as number one in the display market in the first quarter. IDC pegs Facebook's share of the market as just 8.8%, making it number three.
