When it comes to link building, it is easy to lose the forest for the trees. The biggest issue is setting a goal and staying with it. Alas, most people set the wrong goal and then lose site of even that. Let's take a look at the best approach you can take.
I own over 350 sites on various subjects. I've been doing this for over 10 years, so it really isn't all that great a number and some sites are in better shape than others. What all have in common, however, is the number of link requests they get. They come in by the bushels and most of them are laughably misguided. There are two reasons for this and are the two reasons you must focus on to get good rankings for your site through link building.
The first issue has to do with relevancy. If I have a site on link building, why are you requesting that I link to your GPS site? The two subjects have nothing in common, so why should I agree. Neither of us will gain anything. Instead, we'll probably be downgraded for having such a bizarre link. Always go for relevancy when hunting for links. If the site is not anywhere near your subject, don't burn out a link.
The second issue is the number of links you are producing. Search engines, particularly Google, look for natural linking. Is it natural to produce 50 new links in a week from random sites? Not really. This is particularly true when the anchor text of each of the links is the same phrase! Yes, that is really natural!
This second issue ties into another issue you should consider. Link building to produce search engine rankings is all about the quality of links, not the quantity. You should be looking for the best possible link partners. A link from two sites in the top 10 on Google for one of your site subjects are far more valuable than 50 links from random sites that have no rankings and aren't even relevant to your site.
Link building is more about being the turtle than it is being the hare. Go for highly relevant sites and quality links. Doing so will produce high rankings for your site.
