Search engine optimization is a process in which a website is designed to rank higher in the relevant search results of search engines such as Bing, Google, and Yahoo in order to increase the chance that visitors will come to the site and possibly even spend their money there. It is not just retailers that make use of search engine optimization since it is one of the best ways to increase traffic to a site. Sites that rely on advertising to stay in business will also go out of their way to optimize that site in order to increase the number of viewers it has. This has made ethical search engine optimization an important part of today's online world, but what is ethical SEO?
In the most general terms, ethical search engine optimization involves optimizing the site to improve the usability for visitors while still increasing that page's search ranking. A focus on ethical SEO will mean that the site strives to deliver high-quality content that is relevant to the keyword and phrases that were used in the search query. One of the benefits of this type of optimization is that the site is often easier to use and more informative which increases the likelihood that individuals will come back again.
Practices that are often considered unethical involve optimizing the page entirely for search engines without putting a focus on how clean and easy to use the site is for visitors. Unlike ethical SEO practices, a site that is been optimized in ways that are considered unethical will often have it in text or doorway pages all in an effort to 'game the system.' Sites that are not providing relevant content to the users often use these practices. Search Engines are in a constant tug-of-war with these types of sites and they regularly change their algorithms to improve search results. Ethical search engine optimization practices mean that there is no need for such tricks.
One of the primary problems with websites that utilize unethical practices is that, when they work, they will drive down the search rankings of the more relevant websites. This leads users to try different search engines in the hopes of finding better results. The major search engines prefer websites to use ethical SEO practices since it is a win-win for everyone. Unfortunately, many websites that get knocked down in the rankings by sites using unethical practices have little choice but to follow suit in order to climb back up in those same rankings. As more websites come to understand the value of search engine optimization, there is sure to be renewed emphasis on ethical search engine optimization.
